As a part of the EDANA Stewardship programme for absorbent hygiene products, analytical experts from a range of member companies have devised a test method for assessing trace chemicals in baby diapers and other AHPs. These methods are published in the suite of Nonwovens Standard Procedures’ as NWSP 360 parts 1, 2 and 3, describing respectively the sample preparation (by milling, which explains why the methods sometimes is referred to as the milling method), the extraction (simulating extraction of potential trace chemicals by a urine simulant) and the final analysis of the filtrate. This method (amongst other data) has turned out to be useful in the various rounds of consultation in the restriction proposal that is currently being dealt with by ECHA. The method doesn’t fully meet the requirements of all stakehold-ers but is considered to be one of the best available options for further studies.
